Le chumash insulaire (parfois isleño ou cruzeño) est une langue amérindienne de la famille des langues chumash parlée aux États-Unis, sur plusieurs des îles des Channel Islands de Californie. La langue est éteinte.

Répartition géographique

La langue était parlée à l’origine sur les îles de Santa Cruz, San Miguel et Santa Rosa. Chacune des populations résidant sur ces îles avait son propre dialecte, le cruzeño, était par exemple parlé sur Santa Cruz. Vers 1830, les habitants des îles ont été déplacés vers les missions chumash du continent.

Le nom de Chumash, « čʰumaš » en ventureño, créé par les Anthropologues pour désigner la famille de langues des habitants des îles.

[en] Cruzeño language

Cruzeño, also known as Isleño (Ysleño) or Island Chumash, was one of the Chumashan languages spoken along the coastal areas of Southern California. It shows evidence of mixing between a core Chumashan language such as Barbareño or Ventureño and an indigenous language of the Channel Islands. The latter was presumably spoken on the islands since the end of the last ice age separated them from the mainland; Chumash would have been introduced in the first millennium after the introduction of plank canoes on the mainland. Evidence of the substratum language is retained in a noticeably non-Chumash phonology, and basic non-Chumash words such as those for 'water' and 'house'.[1]
