La lingua seneca (endonimo: schaghticoke) è una lingua appartenente alla famiglia linguistica delle lingue irochesi, parlata ormai solo da un centinaio di persone, per la maggior parte anziane, (su una popolazione etnica di 900 persone, secondo il censimento del 2000)[1].

La maggior parte dei locutori abitano nello stato di New York (USA), altri sono presenti in Ontario nella riserva delle Six-Nations. Un gruppo di Seneca vivono anche in Oklahoma, ma sono ormai assimilati ai Cayuga (si tratta dei discendenti dei migranti del XVIII secolo, chiamati Mingo.

La lingua seneca, che i Francesi avevano chiamato tsonnontouan, era una delle lingue della confederazione irochese delle Cinque-Nazioni.

Seneca (/ˈsɛnɪkə/;[2] in Seneca, Onödowáʼga꞉ or Onötowáʼka꞉) is the language of the Seneca people, one of the Six Nations of the Iroquois League; it is an Iroquoian language, spoken at the time of contact in the western portion of New York.[3] While the name Seneca, attested as early as the seventeenth century, is of obscure origins, the endonym Onödowáʼga꞉ translates to "those of the big hill."[3] About 10,000 Seneca live in the United States and Canada, primarily on reservations in western New York, with others living in Oklahoma and near Brantford, Ontario. As of 2013, an active language revitalization program is underway.
