Wiyot (auch Wishosk; wíyat, indigener Name für das Delta des Eel River bzw. für eine Hauptgruppe der Wyots[1]) ist eine ausgestorbene, indigene amerikanische Sprache, die zur Algischen Sprachfamilie gehört.[2]

Diese Sprache wurde früher vom Volk der Wiyot an der Humboldt Bay in Kalifornien gesprochen. Der letzte Muttersprachler, Della Prince, starb 1962. Einige Wiyots versuchen diese Sprache wiederzubeleben.[3]

Klassifikation

Das Wiyot wird mit Yurok zur Ritwan-Sprachfamilie zusammengefasst. Diese zusammen mit den Algonkin-Sprachen bilden wiederum die Algische Sprachfamilie. Während die Klassifikation der algischen Sprachen gemeinhin anerkannt wird, ist die Postulierung der Ritwan-Sprachfamilie umstritten.

Вийот или вишоск (Wiyot, Wishosk) — исчезнувший язык, принадлежавший к алгской семье, на котором говорило племя вийот в Заливе Гумбольдта, ныне Калифорния. Последняя носительница языка Делла Принс умерла в 1962 г. В настоящее время некоторые вийоты пытаются возродить язык. Название языка и племени происходит от названия реки. Язык находился в тесном родстве с другим вымершим языком, юрок. Примечательно, что языки вийот и юрок были отделены от прочих алгских языков — весьма многочисленной семьи — расстоянием в несколько тысяч километров.
