Mentre il mandaico classico (codice ISO 639-3 myz)[1] è usato per i riti religiosi, esiste una forma contemporanea, conosciuta come neo-mandaico, o mandaico moderno (codice ISO 639-3 mid)[2] , parlato da una piccola parte dei Mandei, nei pressi di Ahvaz, nella regione iraniana del Khūzestān.
Coloro in grado di parlare il mandaico classico sono presenti soprattutto sempre in Iran, in Iraq (in particolare nel sud del paese) e nella diaspora.
È una varietà dell'aramaico, con un alfabeto in cui sono presenti anche le vocali (vedi Alfabeto mandaico) ed un vocabolario ed una grammatica influenzati dalla lingua persiana. Uno dei primi dizionari fu composto in lingua latina dal frate carmelitano Matteo di San Giuseppe, nel 1649.

Die mandäische Sprache gehört zur südostaramäischen Dialektgruppe innerhalb der semitischen Sprachen in der afroasiatischen Sprachfamilie und steht dem Jüdisch-Babylonisch-Aramäischen nahe, weniger dem nordostaramäischen Syrischen.[1] Sie wird heute noch von einem Teil der Mandäer, einer gnostischen Religionsgemeinschaft, im Irak und Iran in ihren religiösen Riten und Handlungen verwendet.[2][3][en] Mandaic language
Mandaic is a southeastern Aramaic dialect type in use by the Mandaean community, traditionally based in southern parts of Iraq and southwest Iran, for their religious books. Classical Mandaic is still employed by Mandaean priests in liturgical rites.[2] The modern descendant of Classical Mandaic, known as Neo-Mandaic or Modern Mandaic, is spoken by a small section of Mandaeans around Ahvaz[3]: XXXVI–XXXVIII, 1–101 and Khorramshar[4] in the south Iranian province Khuzistan. Liturgical use of Classical Mandaic is found in Iran (particularly the southern portions of the country), in Baghdad, Iraq and in the diaspora (particularly in the United States, Sweden, Australia and Germany). It is an Eastern Aramaic dialect notable for its abundant use of vowel letters (mater lectionis with aleph, he only in final position, ‘ayin, waw, yud)) in writing, so-called plene spelling (Mandaic script)[5] and the amount of Iranian[6] and Akkadian[7] language influence on its lexicon, especially in the area of religious and mystical terminology. Mandaic is influenced by Jewish Palestinian Aramaic, Samaritan Aramaic, Hebrew, Greek, Latin,[8][9] in addition to Akkadian[7] and Parthian.[10][fr] Mandéen
