era la lingua parlata dal popolo Potawatomi, originariamente stanziate in una piccola area tra il Michigan ed il Wisconsin.

Ha grosse affinità con la Lingua Ojibwe, infatti, tra le lingue algonchine, è stato creato il sottogruppo Ojibwa-Potawatomi che le contiene entrambe.

La lingua viene considerata virtualmente estinta, in quanto il numero di locutori è ridotto a circa 50 persone (tutte anziane), su una popolazione etnica che ne conta 25.000.[2].

Era parlata in Michigan, Wisconsin e Kansas negli USA, ma erano presenti dei locutori anche nel sud dell'Ontario (Canada).

Rivitalizzazione della lingua

Dal gennaio del 2013 è stato istituito un corso, in cui "gli studenti saranno affiancati a locutori Potawatomi", presso l'Hannahville Indian Community.[3]

Potawatomi (/ˌpɒtəˈwɒtəmi/, also spelled Pottawatomie; in Potawatomi Bodwéwadmimwen, or Bodwéwadmi Zheshmowen, or Neshnabémwen) is a Central Algonquian language. It was historically spoken by the Pottawatomi people who lived around the Great Lakes in what are now Michigan and Wisconsin in the United States, and in southern Ontario in Canada. Federally recognized tribes in Michigan and Oklahoma are working to revive the language.

Потаватоми (Potawatomi, Pottawotomi, Pottawottomi) — язык индейского племени потаватоми, принадлежащий к оджибвейской ветви алгонкинской подсемьи языков. Распространён в районе Великих озёр. В США на нём говорят в Мичигане, Висконсине, и Канзасе, а в Канаде — на юге Онтарио. В настоящее время осталось только 50 носителей языка[1][2], все из которых находятся в старшем возрасте. Предпринимаются усилия по возрождению языка, в которых участвуют около 250 человек, для которых этот язык второй[2].
