Lukáš Hurt grew up in Česká Třebová, graduating from an eight-year college prep high school in 2003. He then studied History and English at the Palacký University Olomouc Faculty of Arts. In 2008 he was awarded Bachelor's degrees in both subjects, and in 2013 was awarded his Master's degree in English.
From 2006 to 2011, he lived and worked various jobs at a family hotel on the west coast of Ireland, where he began devoting himself to hill walking and photography. In 2009–2010 he travelled through both islands of New Zealand and self-published a travelogue with texts and photos of his trip for friends.
After his permanent move home to the Czech Republic in 2012, he began to work as a translator and editor for Argo Publishers[1] and the magazínes Bylinky revue [Herbal Review] and Legalizace [Legalisation]. Gradually his translation work began to centre on the theme of cannabis, with clients who included festival organisers (Cannafest), conferences (Konopí a věda – Cannabis and Science; EuroAmCBC), patient groups (KOPAC), doctors, and higher educational institutions (Palacký University Olomouc, Mendel University Brno, St. Anne's University Hospital Brno).
In 2016 he started working as the Central European correspondent for the largest global cannabis website – Leafly.[2] In addition, he is the author and translator of a number of publications and brochures; from 2014–2018 he took on all translation work within the auspices of Prague's Cannafest,[3] the largest cannabis festival in the world, and in 2018 he was the organisational manager of the EuroAmCBC conference in Prague.
In 2018, he became Editor-in-Chief of the magazine Konopí, a bi-monthly aimed at informing the public about the medical and technical uses of cannabis, which he began publishing in cooperation with Bob Hýsek and Robert Veverka.[4] It mainly contains texts and interviews aimed at not only doctors and medical professionals, but also patients, who have decided to use cannabis medications in their healthcare regimes. The magazine was the first Czech media channel focussing on medical marijuana. The English version, Cannabis Therapy magazine, is available free online.
Thanks to the magazine, Hurt has had the opportunity to conduct in-depth interviews with a number of Czech and global personalities in the cannabis field, such as chemist Lumír Hanuš, the former national Czech drug czar Jindřích Vobořil, the leader of the Czech Pirate Party Ivan Bartoš, oncologist Ondřej Sláma, neurologist Marta Vachová, pharmacologist and veterinarian Leoš Landa, researcher and director of the Cannabis Research Center in Brno Václav Trojan, pharmacist Veronika Prokešová, agronomist Marie Bjelková, and many more.
Since 2019 he has been organising the annual Max Švabinský Cup chess tournament. As a youth player, in 1999 he placed third in the Czech championship, H16 category, and became a Candidate Master at the age of fourteen. As an adult, he played many years for Ústí nad Orlicí in the second Czech league[5] and with his home team of Česká Třebová, made it for the first time in the team's history into the second league 2009. In 2000–2004 and 2018–2020, he trained youths in chess.
