Биография

Джон Уэллс родился 11 марта 1939 года в городе Бутл, Ланкашир, Англия. Его мать была англичанкой, а отец — выходцем из Южной Африки. У Джона Уэллса было двое младших братьев. В возрасте 16 лет Джон Уэллс изучил эсперанто.

Поступил в Тринити-колледж Кембриджского университета, в 1960 году получил там степень бакалавра, а в 1964 — магистра. Также учился в Университетском колледже Лондона, где в 1962 году получил степень магистра, а в 1971 — докторскую степень[2].

Его наиболее известные публикации Accents of English, The Sounds of the IPA, Lingvistikaj Aspektoj de Esperanto, и словарь произношений Longman Pronunciation Dictionary. Он является автором словаря английский-эсперанто и изобретателем фонетического алфавита ASCII X-SAMPA.

Президент Всемирной эсперанто-ассоциации (1985—1995), Международной фонетической ассоциации (2003—2007). До 2006 года работал в Университетском колледже Лондона.
