Il testo bilingue di Amathus

La più famosa iscrizione è un testo bilingue, eteocipriota-dialetto attico, inciso su un blocco di marmo nero trovato sull'acropoli di Amathus nel 1913 e datato intorno al 600 a.C. Il testo Eteocipriota è scritto in caratteri ciprioti da destra a sinistra. Il testo greco in lettere maiuscole e da sinistra a destra.

Als Eteokyprisch oder Eteozyprisch bezeichnet man eine ägäische Sprache, die vermutlich im 1. Jahrtausend v. Chr. neben dem Altgriechischen auf Zypern gesprochen wurde. Sie wurde durch das Griechische verdrängt und starb bis gegen Ende des 1. Jahrtausends v. Chr. aus. Den Begriff ‚Eteokyprisch‘ schuf im Jahr 1932 der Altorientalist Johannes Friedrich,[1] nachdem bereits 1911 Richard Meister auf nichtgriechische Texte aus Zypern hingewiesen hatte.[2]

Eteocypriot was a pre-Indo-European language spoken in Cyprus by the pre-Hellenic population until the Iron Age. The name means "true" or "original Cypriot" parallel to Eteocretan, both of which names are used by modern scholarship to mean the pre-Greek languages of those places.[2] Eteocypriot was written in the Cypriot syllabary, a syllabic script derived from Linear A (via the Cypro-Minoan variant Linear C). The language was under pressure from Arcadocypriot Greek from about the 10th century BC and finally became extinct in about the 4th century BC.
