Speakers refer to their language as ɲáː wàm. Kugama is an exonym that is often used by the speakers themselves when speaking in other languages, while Wã̀m is the name they use to refer to themselves.[7]

Кугама (также кугамма, вегам, ямале, ямало; англ. kugama, kugamma, wegam, yamale, yamalo) — адамава-убангийский язык, распространённый в восточных районах Нигерии, язык народа кугама[2][3]. Входит в состав ветви леко-нимбари подсемьи адамава[1][4][5]. Возможно, образует вместе с идиомом генгле один язык кугама-генгле (генгле-кугама)[2][6].
