Phonology


Baba has a (C)V(C) syllable structure, with syllabic nasals. The only phonemes that can occur in the final position are /p, m, ŋ, ʔ, r/ and /x/. There are no vowel-initial roots but they can form morphemes.[2]

Between nasals and vowels, voiceless stops become voiced; a noticeable exception is /ɡ͡b/, which is its own separate phoneme. There are also some additional phonological processes that create the allophones of [r~d͡z], [l~d], [j~d͡ʒ], and [ɣ~g~w].[2]

Vowels are also punctuated with contrastive high and low tones.[2]

Die Sprache Baba (auch baba 1, bapa, bapakum, papia, supapya’; ISO 639-3: bbw[1]) ist eine bantoide Sprache innerhalb der Gruppe Nun aus der Gruppe der Graslandsprachen, die von insgesamt 24.500 Personen[2] in der Kameruner Nordwestprovinz gesprochen wird.

Le baba – également connu sous le nom de baba 1, bapa, bapakum, papia, papiakum, supapya, supapya' – est une langue bantoïde des Grassfields parlée par environ 24 500 personnes (2005) dans 5 villages de la région du Nord-Ouest au Cameroun, dans le département du Ngo-Ketunjia et l'arrondissement de Babessi, particulièrement à Baba I, dans la plaine de Ndop[1].
